She was a musician, artist, designer and singer who broke through barriers in the industry. She was the first Mexican American artist who was both traditional and modern. She brought both cultures together and helped bring Tejano music to the forefront. The tragic loss of her life shattered her rise in popularity, and it is what happens often the moment a brilliant, warm singer dies too young, it caused many to grieve her unrealized potential. Through the years, her the fans became inspired to work even harder to ensure that Selena's accomplishments would not go unnoticed. Her death in a shooting triggered an emotional response within the Latino society that could be similar to Elvis Presley, and John Lennon. An enormously popular singer throughout Latino communities across North America her music crossed borders of culture to impact the lives of children as well as old. Selena was a hot glamorous performer on stage and was often referred to by the Latina Madonna. Off-stage Selena was an excellent role model since she participated actively in antidrug and AIDS campaigning.
